Jan. 2009: Ode to Belhaven

Belhaven
the perfect mixture of urban and walkable, breatheable, drivable
the right combination of quaint and modern
a good ratio of used to open space
Jackson, with its
diffuse highway system as spread out as the fibers of a stretched sweater,
with its
churches advertised on billboards right next to quick divorce billboards,
contains all the palpable paradoxes of any city
but its school system is the ultimate conundrum,
and has me daily marveling at one thing or another -
underachievement, careless attitudes, possibility without direction, unharnessed potential -
but before I can fully digest anything, it's
back home to Belhaven,
in its unfair security removed from the "bad parts"
Belhaven welcomes me home with its predictable potholes
and I relax in the comfort of home.
